Democrats Vow to Probe Trump Business Deals as Midterm Results Narrow
As Democrats consolidate control of both chambers of Congress following the midterm elections, they have pledged to launch investigations into former President Donald Trump’s business practices. The political shift coincides with several high-profile races that remain unresolved, including critical Senate contests in Alaska and Mississippi where final tallies are still pending.
Democratic lawmakers have pledged to scrutinize former President Donald Trump’s business operations, citing concerns over "inside trades" and "tendrils of corruption," as the party prepares to take control of Congress next year. The commitment marks a significant shift in the political landscape following the midterm elections.
Despite the broad national outcome, several key contests remain unresolved. As of Thursday, the Associated Press had not yet called four races for the U.S. Senate or governor’s office. The tightest margins are in Alaska, Kansas, and Mississippi, where outstanding votes keep the results uncertain.
In Mississippi’s Senate race, Democrat Scott Colom has extended his lead over Republican incumbent Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith to 1,145 votes with 96 percent of ballots counted. Several thousand provisional ballots are expected to be processed, a process that will likely determine the winner. The state has until November 10 to resolve these ballots. In 2022, Mississippi counted approximately 5,700 provisional ballots. While the state lacks an automatic recount provision, a challenger may seek a court order for one.
In the House of Representatives, 35 races involving contested party control remain undecided. The Associated Press does not issue projections and will only declare a winner when it is determined that no scenario allows the trailing candidate to close the gap.
Elsewhere in the political news, Democratic Socialist Nithya Raman won the race for mayor of Los Angeles. In California, outgoing Governor Gavin Newsom granted clemency to all 548 inmates on the state’s death row, a move that has fueled speculation about a potential 2028 presidential run.
Internationally, British Prime Minister announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not be invited to the upcoming G20 summit. In legal news, comedian Russell Brand was found guilty of rape and sexual assault charges.
