Shelton quits US Open with shoulder injury
Sixth seed Ben Shelton's US Open bid was derailed Friday by a shoulder injury that forced him to retire from his third-round match against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino.
Shelton led Mannarino by two sets to one before hurting his shoulder at the start of the fourth set, and attempted to play through the pain.
But he eventually threw in the towel after the 77th-ranked Mannarino took the match to a deciding set, fighting back tears as he walked off the court.
"When he started to have pain he was leading in the match, he honestly probably would have won that match," said Mannarino.
"It's very unfortunate for him and lucky for me."
The 37-year-old Mannarino will play Czech 20th seed Jiri Lehecka in the last 16. Mannarino has never reached a Grand Slam quarter-final.
