Stubbs scores fifty as South Africa extend lead over India to 508
Tristan Stubbs scored an unbeaten half-century as South Africa extended their second-innings lead over India to an imposing 508 and closed in on a series win in the second Test on Tuesday.
World Test champions South Africa lead the two-match series 1-0 and even a draw in Guwahati would seal their first series win in India since 2000.
India suffered their fourth defeat in six home Tests in the opener in Kolkata and are battling to avoid another damaging loss.
The Proteas reached 220-4 at the second break on day four after they lost just one wicket in the second session.
A steady Stubbs was on 60 and Wiaan Mulder on 29 at the lunch interval.
Play starts 30 minutes early in the northeastern city because of early sunsets with the order of intervals reversed, meaning lunch comes after tea.
Stubbs and Tony de Zorzi, who made 49, put on a fourth-wicket stand of 101 before Ravindra Jadeja dismissed De Zorzi for his third wicket of the day.
A dominant South Africa resumed on 26-0 after bundling out India for 201 on day three to lead by 288 in the first innings.
Left-handed opener Ryan Rickelton hit three fours in the first session before he fell to Jadeja's left-arm spin while attempting another hit. He made 35.
Jadeja bowled the other overnight batter, Aiden Markram, for 29 before fellow spinner Washington Sundar dismissed skipper Temba Bavuma for three.
Stubbs and De Zorzi then put on a century stand to further frustrate the hosts, before Jadeja broke through to trap De Zorzi lbw.
