According to a recent statewide analysis conducted by Freidin Brown, P.A., using national health data and Florida birth records, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), a severe neonatal brain injury caused by oxygen deprivation, affects approximately 1.7 per 1,000 live births in the United States, or more than 12,000 newborns each year. Based on Florida's roughly 210,000 to 220,000 annual births, the firm's analysis estimates 300 to 600 infants in the state may develop moderate to severe forms of HIE each year.
