Jonathan Kuminga's decision to sign with Minnesota has drawn criticism from former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas, who questioned both the financial terms and the forward's likely role on the Timberwolves.

Kuminga, 23, agreed to a two-year contract worth $12.4 million. The New York Post reported that the Los Angeles Lakers had offered an arrangement under which he could earn roughly the same amount each year, rather than across two seasons.

Arenas used his podcast to argue that Kuminga was accepting unfavorable agreements. He also questioned whether playing alongside multiple maximum-contract players would leave Kuminga as a fourth or fifth offensive option.

The criticism included a suggestion that others might be influencing the decision for their own benefit. The report supplied no evidence establishing that allegation.

Kuminga has maintained that he chose Minnesota because he wanted a winning culture. The Timberwolves have not won an NBA championship or reached the Finals, as the report noted in discussing his explanation.

In Minnesota, he joins a roster featuring LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards. The Lakers' pitch included a starting role alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.

Los Angeles and Kuminga held discussions during the offseason but did not agree on a contract. His decision leaves the Lakers continuing to seek a versatile defensive wing before the season begins.

Arenas' comments represent his assessment of the choice. Kuminga's stated preference for Minnesota remains his own explanation for accepting the deal.
