Australia coach Walters heading to St Helens after World Cup

Australia coach Kevin Walters will leave the role to take over at English Super League powerhouse St Helens after the Rugby League World Cup this year, he said Thursday.

Walters, who was appointed Kangaroos head coach when Mal Meninga left two years ago, said he was relishing the challenge.

"St Helens are one of the most iconic and successful brands in rugby league," the 58-year-old said in a statement after signing a three-year contract.

"At the end of last year I was in England for the Ashes series as the Kangaroos head coach.

"I witnessed firsthand how tough, physical, and skilful the English players were. I look forward to being a part of Super League in 2027 with the Saints."

Before his departure Walters will lead the defending champions at the World Cup in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea from October 15-November 15.

They have been drawn in the same group as fellow heavyweights New Zealand and open their account against their arch-rival in Sydney on October 15.

Walters played 291 matches with the Canberra Raiders and Brisbane Broncos, winning six Premierships, while featuring in 20 State of Origin games for Queensland and playing 11 Tests.

He coached the Broncos and Queensland before taking the Australia job.
