Toronto's Guerrero wins MLB record arbitration hearing award

Toronto Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will be paid $19.9 million for the 2024 Major League Baseball season after winning the highest salary ever awarded in an MLB arbitration hearing on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old Canadian-Dominican first baseman had a three-personal panel select his request over the Blue Jays' offer of $18.05 million.

The result is a $5.4 million salary boost over 2023 for the three-time MLB All-Star son of Baseball Hall of Fame legend Vladimir Guerrero Sr.

The prior record MLB salary won in an arbitration hearing was the $14 million awarded last year to Seattle Mariners outfielder Teoscar Hernandez.

Guerrero was the 2021 American League Most Valuable Player runner-up when he batted .311 with 48 home runs.

Last year, Guerrero batted .264 with 26 homers and batted in 94 runs and won the MLB Home Run Derby contest at the MLB All-Star Game, a feat achieved by his father in 2007.
