While Italian press reported Goggia, 31, suffered a double leg fracture and her season is over, FISI said "no diagnosis has yet been made by the medical commission".

"These examinations will be carried out in the next few hours and a further update will be made later," FISI added on their web site.

They said the skier "straddled a gate with her right leg in a right-hand turn".

Italian media reported she broke both her tibia and her fibula.

"Turbo Goggia" also won the downhill Olympic silver in 2022 and is the reigning World Cup champion and leader in the discipline this season.

She has 24 World Cup victories, six in super-G the rest in downhill, the most recent in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, in Austria.

This season has brought a string of serious injuries to top skiers.

The women's circuit has already lost two former Olympic gold medallists.

Slovakian slalom specialist Petra Vlhova and Switzerland's 2022 Olympic downhill champion Corinne Suter both suffered season-ending knee injuries.

On the men's side, French former overall World Cup champion Alexis Pinturault and Austrian slalom specialist Marco Schwarz were sidelined due to knee injuries.

Norway's 2020 overall World Cup winner, Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde sustained a deep cut to his shin in a crash.
