NFL Seahawks pick Ravens assistant Macdonald as new coach: reports

The NFL's Seattle Seahawks will hire Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald to be their new head coach, according to multiple reports on Wednesday.

The NFL Network and ESPN, citing unnamed sources, reported the move. The NFL Network reported Macdonald, 36, will be signed to a six-year deal while ESPN said the decision came after a first meeting Tuesday in Baltimore and a second interview on Wednesday.

Macdonald, 36, will replace 72-year-old Pete Carroll, who guided the Seahawks for the past 14 seasons before stepping down three weeks ago.

That means Seattle will go from having the NFL's oldest head coach to having its' youngest.

Macdonald began his NFL coaching career as an intern on Ravens coach John Harbaugh's staff in 2014. He served as a defensive assistant, defensive backs coach and linebacker coach before leaving in 2021 to spend a season on the University of Michigan staff of Harbaugh's brother Jim.

Macdonald returned to the Ravens as defensive coordinator in 2022 and this past season his unit's work helped Baltimore to an NFL-best 13-4 regular-season record.

The Ravens had the NFL's top-rated defensive unit and led the NFL in sacks and takeaways as well as scoring defense.

The hiring would leave the NFL's only coaching vacancy on the Washington Commanders.
