Malan smashes hundred as England pile pressure on Bangladesh

Dawid Malan bludgeoned a century as defending champions England looked set for a huge score in their World Cup match against Bangladesh in Dharamsala on Tuesday.

Jos Buttler's men showed no signs of a hangover after the nine-wicket mauling they suffered at the hands of New Zealand in their tournament opener.

England made a steady start at the picturesque Himalayan ground after being asked to bat, with left-hander Malan outscoring the powerful Jonny Bairstow.

The opening batsmen put on 115 before Bairstow, playing in his 100th one-day international, was bowled by Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan for 52.

Malan, 36, brought up a stylish century -- his fourth one-day international ton in 2023 -- in the 32nd over, reaching the landmark off 91 balls, with 12 fours and two sixes.

He then pressed his foot on the accelerator, smashing 20 runs off just four balls during a Mehidy Hasan Miraz over.

England had reached 232-1 off 34 overs, with Malan 127 not out and Joe Root unbeaten on 51.
